Happy New Year to all you photo fans, In 2008 I made the move to another site in an attempt to broaden my photo sharing abilities and as that was working for the past 2 years or so, due to many changes in life beyond my control I am moving back to blogspot and removing my other site from the net. I will update photos when I get a chance to.

Occum Head-On w/ Double entrapment 12/22/07

Dec 22, 2007 - Around 07:0ohrs, The Occum FD was dispatched to Taftville-Occum Rd for an auto acciden with injuries. Occum Chief McKeon arrived to find a two car head-on with double entrapment. Taftville R-2 was requested for their Hurst tool. Occum used their Holmotro Combi-tool on one car while Taftville used their Hurst tool and rams to extricate the occuoant of the other car. American transported 2 to WWBH. Norwich PD is investigating.

126 Oakridge St - Norwich - 12/21/07

Dec 21, 2007 - At 15:41hrs, The City of Norwich was dispatched to a structure fire at 126 Oakridge St. Units arrived to find fire on the 3rd flr. The fire was knocked down and the building vented. Norwich FMO is investigating.

Dec 14, 2007 - On this slippery morning the Occum fire department was dispatched to a rollover on Scotland Rd. Occum SQ-4 and ET-42 arrived to find a jeep that had rolled onto it's side. No injuries were reported. Norwich PD is investigating.

Dec 13, 2007 - At 11:59hrs the Lisbon, Jewett City fire departments w/ the Taftville FAST responded to North Burnham Highway for a barn fire. Lisbon ET-254 arrived to find a well involved barn fire. A tanker task force was started bringing Canterbury, Griswold, Voluntown, and Plainfield. The building was total loss. The Lisbon FMO is investigating.

Preston Auto Fire 12/01/07

Dec 1, 2007 - At 06:28hrs Ledyard and Norwich 911 started receiving an influx of 911 calls reporting an auto accident with fire on Rt-2 in Preston just over the Norwich line. Preston Chief Casey arrived to find one auto fully involved in fire after hitting a guard wire post. The crew from P-11 with assistance from P-13,P-23, & P-27 extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported. Sorry about the quality, the sun was rising and it was difficult to get the right exposure.

Eastford- 297 Old Colony Rd. 11/20/07

Nov 20, 2007 - Around 03:00hrs, Eastford with M/A from Bungay,Pomfret,Woodtsock, Ashford,Muddy Brook, Chaplin,Williamsville, & East Brklyn respondd to a house fire at 197 Old colony Rd. Units arrived to find heavy fire to the rear of an old farm house. The fire was initail knocked down by frist arriving uits but due to the contruction o fht e farm house the fire took off on all flrs. it took crews 3 hours to control this diffficult fire. Yantic 3rd Alarm - 305 Washington St

Nov 12, 2007 - At 09:45hrs, the Yantic fire engine co was dispatched to 305 washington St for a kitchen fire. Units arrived to find fire on the 2nd and 3rd flrs. Assistance from Taftville, City of Norwich, East Great Plains,Occum,Laurel Hill, & the Naval submarine base. Crews worked hard at an offensive interior attack but were forced out by fire conditions. Norwich - 2nd Alarm - Golden & Dillon St

Nov 3, 2007 - At around 20:12hrs, Norwich was dispatched to the corner of Golden & Dilllon St for a working structure fire. Norwich units arrived to find heavy fire emittting from the rear of a 3 stry wd. A 2nd alarm brought Taftville, East Great Plains, and additional engines from Yantic and Laurel Hill to the scene. Crews worked for 3 hours to bring the fire under control. Norwich FMO is investigating.

9 Birchwood Terr - Dayville - 10/31/07

Oct 31, 2007 -Just after noon QV Dispatch received a call reporting a fire in the apartment of 9 Birchwood Terrace. Dayville, with mutaul aid from Danielson, Williamsville, & Pomfret FAST were dispatched, Atwood Hose was later sent for manpower and Attawagan covered the Town of Killingly. It was an outstanding stop made by the first due crews from this becoming a devastating fire. The Killingly FMO is investigating. More photos Thursday

Taftville Mobile Home Fire - 10/28/07

Oct 28, 2007 - Just before 15:00hrs, Taftville was dispatched to a structure fire at 136 Hunters Rd, Oakland Heights Mobile Home Park. This is a 55 & older mobile home park. Taftville Asst Chief Car -28 arrived to find heavy smoke, active fire under a mobile home with extension to the interior of the home. Mutual Aid from Occum & Yantic FAST were sent due to the closest hydrant being over 2000 ft away. Taftville crews found a heavy fire condition under the home and extinguished it quickly. Williamsville Barn Fire - 10/14/07

On Sunday October 14th around 17:00, Williamsville Fire was dispatched for a barn fire with mutual aid from Dayville, Pomfret and the KB ambulance. Upon arrival of Deputy Chief Cooper he reported a fully involved barn with a house as an exposure problem and requested tankers from Attawaugan, South Killingly, and Mortlake. Crews went to work and extinguish the fire and protected the exposure.

Oct 11, 2007 - At 16:18hrs the Taftville, Occum & Yantic FAST responded to 292 Norwich Ave for a structure fire. Taftville crews arrived to find fire venting out three windows on the 3rd flr and one window on the 4th flr. ET-21 and Tower 25 worked together with fire suppression and ventilation tactics to quickly extinguish the fire. Taftville was assisted by Yantic and Norwich Eng-2 crews. No injuries were reported. Norwich 2nd Alarm Fire - Williams St 09/30/07

Sept. 30, 2007 - At 14:50hrs the City of Norwich FD were dispatched to Williams St for a structure fire. Units arrived to find a fire on the 3rd flr of a 3 stry victorian. The Mohegan Tribal FAST and East Great Plains FD were assigned to the alarm. Crews attempted an interior attack. Conditions changed when the wind took control of the fire and quickly spread it thru out the 3rd flr forcing an evacuation order and defensive operations. After 10 minutes of defensive operations, a 2nd attempt at interior attack proved to be effective and extinguish the fire. Thanks to Kalya and Costa for providing me with these camera phone photos.

Sept 27, 2007 - At 07:21hrs the Taftville FD was dispatched to a structure fire on Pratt Ave. Upon arrival, light smoke was showing from the 2nd flr with all 15 occupants out of the building. As per SOP Occum and Yantic FAST were started but the fire was knocked with a water can and extinguished with a handline. Crews overhauled and ventilated the room. 1 civilian was transported for unknown injuries. Norwich FMO is investigating

Yantic Haz-Mat Fire 09/26/07

Sept 26, 2007 - Around 10:00hrs the Yantic Fire Engine Co was dispatched to Phelps Dodge corp for smoke in the building. Yantic crews arrived to find a smouldering fire in the copper-oxide hopper making this incident a Haz-Mat. An extra engine co. from Taftville joined Yantic crews for 7 hours to handle this incident. Yantic & Taftville crews worked with a clean-up contractor, Norwich FMO,CT DEP, and Phelps Dodge officals to mitigate this incident. No injuries were reported, even with temps in the mid 80's and high humidity.

Jewett City - 27 Ann St

September 16, 2007 - At 14:56hrs the Jewett City, Griswold, and 1 ET from Lisbon responded to 27 Ann St for a fire in a bedroom. Units arrived to find light smoke showing and a small fire in in a laundry basket in a rear bedroom. The fire was extinguished with a water can, the basket overhauled and the structure vented. Units went into service in about 30 minutes.

September 15, 2007 - The 2007 State Firefighters Convention was held at the University of New Haven. The convention started at 11:00am with a couple of introductions, Legistlative awards, Elections of the 2007-2008 Officer, and the firefighter awards. The following awards were given out.

Brooklyn (Mortlake) House Fire

September 3, 2007 - At around 01:50hrs, QV starting receiving numerous 911 calls from Breen Rd in Brooklyn reporting a house fire. Mortlake, Atwood Hose, East Brooklyn fire departments with FAST teams from Central Village and Moosup responded. Units arrived to find a 1 stry ranch well involved in fire. All occupants were accounted for and safe outside the structure. Additional tankers were added to the assignment. The Brooklyn FMO is investigating. Mohegan Car Fire

August 19, 2007 - At around 21:00hrs the Mohegan, Montville, & Mohegan Tribal fire departments responded to the end of Broadview Ave for a car fire. Mohegan M-23 and Mohegan Tribal Eng-1 arrived to find a car in the woods fully involved. Crews knocked down the fire with an 1 3/4 hoseline and check the car for any occupants. Units went into service in about 20 minutes. Montville PD and Montvile FMO are investigating. Thanks to Mr Knolls for the photo.

Norwich Building Fire

August 18, 2007 - At 23:58hrs Norwich Fire was receiving numerous 911 calls reporting a well involved building fire in the marina/Laurel Hill area. Norwich Fire Department Headquarters, Engine 2 and Laurel Hill were dispatched. Battalion Chief Schroeder arrived at the Putts Up Dock mini-golf at the marinia and reported a fully involved building, starting master stream operations. Norwich units did a great job of make a quick knockdown with master streams. Laurel Hill provided a supply line to Engine 2. Crews remained on scene for several hours hitting hotspots. Norwich FMO and Norwich PD are investigating.

Jewett City 3rd Alarm

August 11, 2007 - At 15:01hrs Jewett City,Griswold,Lisbon,Voluntown,Baltic and the Taftville FAST were dispatched to a structure fire at Keiths Appliance at 86 North Main St. Jewett City units arrived to find a fire on the "B" side of the building that ran the walls to the 2nd flr and attic. An auto was also involved. The exterior stairs on the "B" side had pulled from the building and collapsed, hampering an interior attack. Due to summer heat, a 3rd alarm was sent for firefighter safety and ensuring fresh crews. the fire was hidden behind wooden siding and barn style boards. Defensive operations were the only safe way to extinguish the fire. Numerous firefighters were treated on scene for heat exhaustion. The cause is under investigation by Griswold FMO. East Putnam Fire - 08/01/07

On Wednesday August 1st around 3:30 East Putnam Fire Dept with mutual aid from Putnam, Attawaugan,Dayville, Community and West Glocester were dispatched for a structure fire at 168 Liberty Highway. Upon arrival of first arriving units they found a 2 story wood frame with heavy fire conditions on the second floor self venting out the A and C side windows. Units went to work making an aggressive interior attack knocking down the fire quickly. Due to the extreme heat 1st alarm companies rotated through the overhaul process. No injuries were reported.

126 Boswell Ave - Norwich

July 23, 2007 - At 01:38hrs Headquarters and Eng-2 responded to 126 Boswell Ave for a building fire. Battalion 1 arrived and reported a working fire in the Guy's Barber Shop. An " All Hands Working" was transmitted and the crews worked hard to stop the fire that was traveling thru the walls in an attempt to consume the building. By 04:00hrs the fire was deemed under control and crews remained for many hours for overhaul. Norwich fire personnel were supported by the Mohegan Tribal FD FAST, Norwich PD, American Ambualcne, Public Utilities, east Great Plains (Cover Assignment) and Canteen 1. The fire is under investigation by the Norwich FMO

East Thompson Dump Truck Crash

July 12, 2007 - The East Thompson Fire Dept and Community Ambulance were dispatched for a dump truck accident on Quaddick Town Farm Road. Upon arrival units found a dump truck that had went through a telephone pole and ended up against a tree. There were live wires on top of the truck so the patient was unable to be removed from the truck until CL & P arrived on scene. 1 patient was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. June 19, 2007 - At 11:22hrs the Griswold and Jewett City fire companies were dispatched to 659 Voluntown Rd (Sonoco Station) for a propane tank fire involving a trailer. FM-155 and ET-355 arrived to find a small trailer involved with fire. JC ET-156 was staged per command. One 1 3/4 handline was deployed and the fire extinguished. A column of black smoke could be seen from as far away as Occum and Plainfield.

Ledyard 2nd Alarm

June 18, 2007 - At around 14:45hrs the Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire companies with Ledyard EMS were dispatched to a house fire in the area of #4 Cartridge Trail in the Highland Section of Ledyard. Units arrived to find a working fire with fire venting from the roof and "C" side of the building. Crews deployed handlines and went to work. Additional manpower from Old Mystic, Mashantucket and the Sub-base FAST also responded.

Lisbon Rollover - Rt-169

June 3, 2007 - On this warm, sunny Sunday, the Lisbon FD was dispatched to an rollover with entrapment on Rt-169. Rescue -554 and Eng-154 arrived to find 1 car on it's roof in a field. Crews worked to removed the sole occupant out of the auto and transported the victim to WWBH for medical treatment.

May 31, 2007 - At 19:45hrs the Occum and Baltic FD's were dispatched to an electrical fire on Nashua St. Occum Et-42 arrived to find a trailer charged with smoke and a small fire in the laundry area. A 1 3/4 hoseline was deployed and ventilation set up. The homeowner stated there was a lightning strike in the area prior to noticing smoke coming from the dyer. The cause is unknown as the Norwich FMO is investigating.

Lisbon House Fire - 05/30/07

May 30, 2007 - At around 10:30hrs Lisbon, Occum and Taftville FAST were dispatched to 104 Kinsman Hill Rd for a house fire. Units arrived to find smoke coming from a 2 stry wd. The fire was located on the 1st flr, center of the house. crews did a great job of knocking down the fire, the 1st FAST was assigned Roof and ladder assignments. baltic came in as a 2nd FAST, Canterbury and Griswold for additional tankers.

2 Deepwoods Dr - Yantic

May 14, 2007 - At around 17:15hrs - Norwich Fire was receiving numerous 911 calls reporting a working structure fire at #2 Deepwoods Dr. While Yantic was responding, units could see a column of black smoke in the distance, an upgrade to the alarm assignment was East Great Plains, Bozrah, Taftville and 4 additional tankers. The 1st two Yantic engines took the driveway and crews took one shot at an quick knock down and interior attack. At that time, the front windows failed causing the fire to intensify and over take the home. A report of firefighters down was transmitted, but turned to be a firefighters foot went thru the rear porch, just as a hoseline blew in the rear. An evacuation was ordered and defensive operation under way. Due to good ground conditions in front of the house, Taftville's Tower 25 was ordered to the front lawn for masterstreams. The home was a total loss, no firefighters or civilians were injured but a dog and 2 cats perished

Norwich - 7 John St - House Fire

May 7, 2007, At around 02:25hrs Norwich headquarters and Eng-2 responded to 7 John St for a structure fire. The on duty Captain stated he could see a working fire from HQ. Norwich Crews arrived to find fire showing from the rear of the structure. all occupants were accounted for. A quick and aggressive fire attack helped save this structure. 1 civlian was transported to WWBH for minor burns. The Norwich FMO is investigating. (Side note: This was the first "significant" fire for the new Eng-2, Sunday morning it had responded to a small fire in the duct work on North Main St and a brush fire. On Sunday May 6, 2007, the Community Fire Co #1 was dispatched to a truck fire on First St. Eng-181 & ET-181 responded and arrived to find active fire showing from the engine compartment. May 02,2007 - At about 08:40hrs, Danielson Fire Dept. with assistance from Dayville, East Brooklyn, Williamsville, Moosup L-194, and the Atwood Hose FAST responded to this fire at 232 Broad St. on the corner of Hawkins St. Multiple handlines were stretched as the fire was said to be located on the third floor. QV notified responding units of 1 vehicle split in half, and the occupant ejected. Canterbury Car 93 arrived on scene establishing command, as personnel tended to the injured driver. R-593 with the Windham Medic transported to Backus.

Bozrah Gilman Bros Corp - 3rd Alarm

April 03, 2007 - At 02:48hrs KX dispatched Bozrah with mutual aid from Colchester and Yantic to Gilman Bros Corp on Thomas Rd for a fire. Units arrived to find a heavy smoke condition and the search for the fire began. Crews were able to find a styrofoam fire in the middle of the building. Three 2.5 handlines were deployed but crews were having a hard time extinguishing the fire. A 3rd alarm was transmitted for manpower and a foam trailer from Norwich to help extinguish the fire. Departments involved were Bozrah, Yantic, Colchester,Franklin,Salem, Gardner Lake, Oakdale, East Great Plains, Taftville, Norwich, Mohegan Tribal FAST, and Lyme.

March 20,2007 - At around 16:20hrs Bozrah with mutual aid from Franklin, Yantic, and Mohegan Tribal FAST responded to a structure fire on Fitchville Rd. Yantic Eng-31 first arrived to find a 1 stry wd dwelling with fire showing. There was a report of a occupant trapped, but primary search was negative. a couple animals were found. The fire in under investigation.

Norwich Kitchen Fire

March 18, 2007 - At 18:45hrs Norwich Platoon 1 was dispatched to a house fire at 32 Western Ave. Numerous calls reported flames coming out the front door. Upon arrival crews found a fire in the rear kitchen that self-vented out the back door. Norwich crews did an excellant job of stopping the fire from spreading into the 2nd floor. (Sorry no action shots, sometimes it's a little hard to do my job and take photos)

March 18, 2007 - At 17:15hrs Montville fire was dispatched to a house fire at 33 Depot Rd. Crews found a fire in the basement, a quick knock down contained the fire to the basement. while conducting primary search of the residence, firefighters found 40 cats through out the house. Some animals were rescued but most succumb to smoke inhalation. Thanks to Ed for taking the photos while I performed my FAST duties.

Norwich Kitchen Fire

March 10, 2007 - Just after noon Norwich Platoon 1 was dispatched to a kitchen fire at 23 Whitaker Ave. Crews arrived to find a working fire in a 1.5 stry wd dwelling. Eng-3 stretched a 1 3/4 line on the fire. A report of a child trapped on the #2 flr was transmitted sending a search team to the #2 flr. Primary search was negative and the child was found safely at a neighbors house. This street is a small narrrow road off Laurel Hill Ave. Norwich Truck 1 was unable to make this road so the Truck 1 crew, FAST Team and EMS had to hike up this long narrow road. 1 Norwich firefighter was injuried, we wish him good luck and a speedy recovery.

Norwich Garage Fire - 106 Peck St

March 6, 2007 - At 15:50hrs Norwich Platoon 2 was dispatched to a garage fire at 106 Peck St, Norwich fire advised of receiving numerous calls. Norwich Car 1 arrived to report smoke coming from a 1.5 stry detached garage. Eng-3 crew stretched a 1 3/4 hoseline and quickly knocked down the fire that involved the rear of the garage. The Mohegan Tribal FAST was dismissed from the assignment and units went in service in about 20 minutes. The fire was not an issue but the weather was, at time of call the temp was 12 degrees with wind chill value below zero.

Feb 26, 2007 - At 06:38hrs a major fire occured at a condo unit at 102 Stonington Rd in Norwich. Responding units were Norwich, Taftville, East Great Plains,Yantic, Laurel Hill, Tankers from Poquotonock, Preston City, Bozrah and too many more to mention. A great job was done by all the firefighters on scene, it was a great example of good team work that extinguished the fire. 6 firefighters were reported injuried, I personnally only know of two, they were minor in nature and those firefighters are recovering.

February 21, 2007 - At 09:22hrs Taftville was dispatched to a structure fire on Norwich Ave. ET-22 responding from a fire prevention detail arrived to find a fire on the 3rd flr. Upgraded alarm assignment added Occum and Yantic FAST. Taftville crews found a room and content fire and made a quick knockdown. Overhaul, vent and salvage operations were then under way. The Norwich FMO and Norwich PD are investigating.

February 18, 2007 - at around 03:00hrs Taftville was dispatched to an auto accident with entrapment on Norwich Ave. Units arrived to find a car had hit 5 parked cars at a used auto dealership. Crews started to extricate the victims while american provided patient care. a hoseline was deployed due to an active gas leak from one of the cars. Both patients were extricated from the car and transported ALS to the Backus trauma center. Taftville crews remained on scene for vehicle removal.

BROOKLYN -- Firefighters from five departments battled a fire late Friday afternoon in a home at 93 Day St.
East Brooklyn firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 4:40 p.m. after neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from the building. Shortly after the first officers arrived, they called for additional apparatus from the Mortlake (Brooklyn) and Danielson departments, and a unit from the Williamsville (Rogers) department. Thompson Hill Garage Fire

On Tuesday February 6th Thompson Hill Fire along with mutual aid from Community Fire, East Putnam Fire full assignments and Quinebaug and East Thompson as FAST were dispatched for a structure fire at 14 Wrightson Drive in the Quaddick lake area. Upon arrival of Thompson Hill's ET 284 the found a 2 car garage well involved with fire. 1 line was placed in operation and Community Fire Co ET 181 laid 600' of 5" supply line from the lake to the scene and place 2 lines into operation and fed ET 284. Thompson Hills second due engine established a water supply to feed the operation. With 3 lines in operation the main body of fire was knocked down within 10 minutes and crews from the initial alarm companies held the scene for overhaul operation.

Units arrived to find a 2 stry colonial with smoke from the rear and side "B" wall. A 2nd Alarm was requesting bring in Yantic, City of Norwich Truck 1, and Mohegan Tribal FAST. January 31, 2007 - At around 20:30hrs South Windam, Windam Center, and Willimantic were dispatched to a well involved house fire with civilians trapped. Willimantic Eng-201 and Tower 101 arrived to find heavy fire from A,B,C sides of a raised ranch. While Willimantic firefighters were performing a rescue the fire flashed burning the on duty captain. The Captain was taken to WCMH and later transferred to Bridgeport burn center for treatment. 2 firefighters were also transported, 1 for cardiac related illness and 1 for a knee injury. Griswold - 1st Alarm Garage Fire

January 27, 2007 - As I was just leaving QV from my evening shift, a 911 call came in reporting a garage fire at #1 Lisa Ave in the town of Griswold. Griswold and Jewett City were initially dispatched. The 1st Griswold officer on scene reported a working fire. an upgrade to the alarm assignment was Voluntown, Lisbon, Plainfield, and Taftville FAST. The weather was cold (5 degrees) with light wind. Griswold and Jewett City crews placed 2 1/2 inch lines and a blitz fire on the building to knocked down the flames. Crews also had to protect a home that was in close proximity. the building was a total loss. numerous vehicles were lost in the fire. Canterbury 2nd Alarm - 62 Wauregan Rd

January 20, 2007 - at 23:16hrs QV dispatched Canterbury and Mortlake fire departments to a structure fire at 62 Wauregan Rd. Canterbury chief Al Lavoie arrived to find fire thru the roof of a single stry ranch on the "D" side. Canterbury Eng-193 and Mortlake Eng-190 arrived and placed two 1 3/4 hoselines in operation thru the front door. Crews were able to knock down the fire but not until it consummed half the roof. Additional assistance from Moosup FAST, Atwood Hose,Central Village and numerous tankers was sent to the scene. The Canterbury FMO is investigating. Oneco 2nd Alarm - Bailey Rd

January 25, 2007 - at 14:14 hrs QV dispatched Oneco and Sterling to a chimney fire at 368 Bailey Rd. While units were enroute a 2nd 911 call reported the fire was progressing. An upgrade to a 1st alarm was ordered. The first officer on the scene reported a working fire with one side of the house involved. A 2nd Alarm was ordered and additional tankers. This address is located in a very remote area of Sterling. Crews made a great stop on the fire but not before destroying most of the interior of the building. The weather conditions were sunny, cold and light wind, temp about 29 degrees with the worst cold weather to hits this region in many years coming tonight. This may be a prelude to what is to come in the next 24-48 hours. Departments that responded were Oneco, Sterling,Voluntown,Moosup, Plainfield, Western Covertry, and Plainfield-Moosup Ambulance.

January 23, 2007 - At 04:15 hrs Norwich FD was dispatched for a structure fire on Tallman St off RT-2, Squad A arrived and reported smoke showing. As units were operating, a Norwich firefighters fell thru the 1st floor and a mayday was transmitted. A rear-entry crew had the ceiling fall on them and an evacuation was ordered. A 2nd alarm was transmitted bringing in East Great Plains and Mohegan Tribal FAST. The Norwich firefighter was removed from the building and a PAR was taken. RT-12 Head-On - Lisbon

January 21,2007 - At around 00:45hrs, the Lisbon FD was dispatched to an auto accident on Rt-12 at Icehouse Rd with entrapment. Lisbon Eng-154 and Rescue 554 arrived on scene to find a 2 car head-on with entrapment (door-pop). Since some of Lisbon's memebers were at the Canterbury structure fire, additional assistance was requested from Taftville fire and ambulances from Baltic and American. a total of 3 patients were transported to WWBH with undisclosed injuries. Rt-12 was closed for about 2 hours while CSP investigated.

25 Klondike St - Private Dwelling Fire

January 1st 2007 at 4:11 A.M Community fire company with mutual aid from Thompson Hill and West Thompson and a FAST response from Quinebaug and East Thompson were dispatched to a structure fire at 25 Klondike street. Upon arrival of Engine 181, firefighters found a 2 story / 2 family with fire self venting from the roof of the 1 story entrance on the D side and pushing toward the eves. Crews made an aggressive attack but the fire had already gotten up into the attic space on the 2 story section. The fire was confined to the attic space, part of the second floor and the 1 story entrance. Additional mutual aid requested to the scene was an engine from Putnam,tanker from East Putnam and an engine from Dudley. Muddy Brook covered the town during the event. December 27, 2006 - a Mass of Christian Burial for Connecticut National Guard Staff Sgt. Joseph E. Phaneuf II was today at the St Patricks Cathedral in Norwich. Staff Sgt. Joseph E. Phaneuf was killed Dec. 15 when his armored vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Military, police and fire personnal from Eastern Connecticut were in attendance to pay tribute to a fallen solider. Also in attendance were the Rhode Island chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders. a group of riders whose mission is to "shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protester, or group of protesters." After the mass of christian burial Staff Sgt. Joseph E. Phaneuf will be buried at Arlington National Cemertary in Virginia. Staff Sgt Joseph E Phanuef was also a member of the Eastford Independent Fire Company No. 1. A full firefighters funeral was given

Dec 19, 2006 - The Bradford FD with assistance from Westerly, Ashaway,Richmond-Carolina, and Old Mystic Fire Departments were involved in a large search and rescue operation along the Pawcatuck River. A man was reported missing to local police. When the local police starting searching the area they found the man car near the Pawcatuck river. a 3 day long search started in the river bring in additional resources from RI DEM,RI EMA,RI State police,CSP,USCG, and the Providence canteen. After 3 long days of searchers, crews found the body of the man down stream, entangled in a tree that had fallen in the water. crews removed the body of the man. The RI medical examiner has the body for an autopsy.

December 3, 2006 - At 19:15 hrs the Yantic and Occum Fire Departments were duel dispatched to a structure fire on Scotland Rd. The caller stated a car was on fire in a detached garage. Yantic Chief arrived to report a working fire. It was a car in a tent-like garage. Yantic Eng-32 arrived and stretched (2) 1.75" hoselines. The fire was knocked down and the car overhauled. The Norwich FMO is investigating.

Taftville Apt Fire, 1 civilian rescued

December 1,2006 At 10:07hrs the Taftville and Occum fire departments were dispatched to a fire alarm at the Wequonnoc Village apartments on North Fifth Ave. ET-21 and Tower 25 responded immediately since crews had just returned from a previous EMS run. ET-21 & Tower 25 crews found a fire on the 3rd floor. Due to about 98 residents still being in the building, a 3rd alarm was requested to assist in evacuating all 98 residents. Bringing in Yantic, Norwich Eng-2, Eng-3, and Tower 1. While ET-21's crew were conducting a size up and primary search of the fire floor, a victim was found in the fire apartment. Tower 25 crew arrived and assisted 21's crew. The victim was removed and brought to awaiting EMS. The fire was held in check by the sprinkler system and the remaining 97 residents were evacuated, 2 others were transported for injuries that occured during the evacuation. The Norwich FMO is investigating.

November 20, 2006 - Just after noon the City of Groton Fire Department with mutual aid from Electric Boat, Poquonock Bridge, Sub base, Center Groton, and Mystic Fire departments responded to the corner of Latham St and Thames St for a fire on the #2 floor. City of Groton and Electric Boat units arrived to find a fire and heavy smoke from a 2 1/2 stry wd dwelling. Crews put a 2 1/2" line in operation to knock down the fire.

Franklin - Rt-32 - Propane Incident

November 16,2006 - At around 15:10hrs Franklin Fire Dept with mutual aid from Bozrah responded to the Quiet Corner Resturant on Rt-32 for a propane tank fire. Lebanon Car 206 was at the scene and reported that a 1000lb propane tank's cap had been broken and the gas company was on the scene venting the tank in an attempt to repair. No fire was visible. The gas company reported the tank was 35% full. An additional tanker from Lebanon was added to the assignment. The road was shut down until the gas vaporized and the area was safe. A vapor cloud was scene over the building for the first 20 minutes into the incident. CSP-Troop K & DEP also responded.

Baltic House Fire Mid-2002

Since fire activity in the area is slow, I figured I would post this fire that happened sometime in 2002. This fire was originally a bedroom fire on Lucier Ct in Baltic off Rt-207 by MS Chambers Mill. At the time Willimantic dispatched Baltic, Franklin and Occum to this address. Upon arrival of Baltic ET-124, an interior attack was started but 5 minutes into the attack, the room flashed and crews had to back out. Mutual Aid was requested from Lisbon,Bozrah, Scotland and Mohegan Tribal FAST. Water supply was limited in this area of town. Scotland HT-116 laid a 5" line from the scene to the Shetucket River and Lisbon Chief Robinson had a great tanker shuttle going but it was not enough for this Baltic Mill House. Rt 32 Dump Truck vs Auto - Minor Door Pop

October 5, 2006 - This Afternoon the Mohegan, Montville and MoheganTribal Fire Departments responded to an auto accident at Rt-32 just North of Sandy Desert Rd. (note: Tribal Fire also responds due to a duel response procedure in place) Medic 55 arrived first to find a loaded dump truck had T-Boned a car just north of Sandy Desert Rd. Mohegan and Montville units arrived shortly after and Mohegan Dep Chief (M-20) took command. Luckily no injuries were reported but firefighters from the tribe used their Halomatro spreaders to pop the drivers side door to get the driver out. EMS units obtained refusals. The tribe and Montville units went into service while Mohegan held the scene.

Community House Fire 10/02/06

October 2, 2006 - At 05:09hrs QVEC received a 911 call for a reported house fire at 50 Buckley Hill Rd in the North Grosnerdale section of Thompson. Initial response was Community Fire Co with Mutual aid from Thompson Hill and West Thompson Fire Depts. Community Asst Chief Seney arrived to find heavy fire on "A" side of the building. The first attack line was trained on a 500 lb Propane tank in the rear of the building. 1 civilian was transported by Community Amb for smoke inhalation. The house was completely destroyed and it took firefighters 3 hours to bring the fire under control. Crews alternated interior and ladder pipe operation to contain the fire. The following departments responded Community (Sta81), Thompson Hill (Sta84), West Thompson (Sta-82), Quinebaug (Sta83), East Thompson (Sta85), Muddy Brook (Sta75), East Putnam (Sta79), and Dudley MA E-1. State FMO is investigating the cause.

Salem, Ct Garage Fire

August 26, 2006 - On Saturday evening the Salem and Gardner lake fire departments with mutrual aid from Colchester, Oakdale,Lyme, and the Mohegan Tribal FAST team responded to 72 Witchmeadow Rd for a garage fire with explosions. Salem Ladder-121 arrived and found heavy smoke and fire from the "D" side of a 1 1/2 stry detached garage with an apartment on the 2nd floor. Exterior operations were conducted to knock the fire down. Once the fire was knocked down an interior operation was conducted from the unburned side of the garage. Extensive overhaul was needed to get the fire that had raced thru the eaves of the garage. mutual aid units went into service in about 90 minutes. while Salem and Gardner Lake firefighters overhauled.
(I didn't have my Olympus camera with me, these shots were taken with my HP635 photosmart, which I keep with me at work. I do not recommend this camera, it eats alot of batteries and kills rechargables in a short amount of time. I was only able to take 5 shots before it died, this has been a common accurance with this camera, I'm starting to think it is afraid of fire!)

August 15,2006 - At 15:35hrs the Poquetanuck and Preston City FD's were dispatched to a 2 car auto accident with injuries and extrication at Rt-12 and Rt2A IFO the old state hospital. Mutual aid from the Mohegan Tribe and Laurel Hill was also dispatched. Mohegan Tribal Eng-1 arrived to find a SUV vs BMW head-on with 3 patient and no entrapment. 1 Patient was transported by Poquetanuck and 1 patient was transported by American Ambulance

Norwich Garage Fire

August 14, 2005 - Norwich Platoon 2 was dispatched to a garage fire in the 400 block of Hamilton Ave. Eng-2 arrived and reported smoke coming from a "detached" garage. Eng-2 crew stretched an1.75 hoseline on the fire. The fire appeared to be in the ceiling area of the garage. Eng-2 crew had the fire knocked down by the time the rest of the assignment arrived. American Ambulance and Mohegan Tribal FAST was started and then canceled by Car-1 due to the fire being under control. The Norwich FMO is investigating.
(I was on my way to work when the call came in, I just happen to be in Greenville at the time of the call. I arrived just as Eng-2 was stretching their line)

Occum - Car vs MC

August 11, 2006 - Just after 12:00pm, The Occum FD was dispatched to a car vs motorcycle in the area of 831 Scotland Rd. 1 patient was transported ALS by American Ambulance and 1 patient refused treatment. Occum Squad -4, ET-42 and Eng-41 responded along with Norwich PD and American Ambulance. This was the second MC accident in eastern Ct. A MC had hit a parked car on Babcock Ave in Plainfield and around 11:30am. 2 victims were treated and transported to WWBH with traumatic injuries.

August 3, 2006 - After clearing up from a structure fire and wires down Taftville was dispatched along with Occum FD to Taftville-Occum Rd for a 2 car head-on with entrapment and serious injury. Norwich PD arrived on scene and reported everyone was out of the vehicles. 2 patients were transported ALS by American to WWBH with serious injuries.

July 29,2006 - Well I just returned from a well deserved vacation on the Cape. While I was there I stopped at a couple of places of interest for you bloggers! I have no action shots but their sounded like there was plenty of action going on. Every day COMM Fire and EMS went past the motel. Mostly EMS, auto accidents, etc. I did see the remains of a auto/ped by the beach on my way to dinner (yum) and I saw Dennis Hook & Ladder110 responding to north Dennis on Saturday for a call, unsure what type.

Putnam,Ct House Fire

In early June, The Putnam Fire Dept. was dispatched to a house explosion on the Day Kimball side of town. Upon their arrival, they found heavy fire on the "A" side of the 2 stry log cabin. Mutual aid came from East Putnam and Pomfret for water and FAST. Initial attack crews made an aggressive attack to knock down the fire. The fire is believe to have started when a propane tank on the front porch ignited. The Putnam FMO is investigating

Well Involved House Fire - Franklin

July 14, 2006 - At around 17:30 hrs the Franklin FD with mutual aid from Baltic and Bozrah were dispatched to a fully involved house fire at the intersection of Pleasure Hill Rd and Robinson Hill Rd. Baltic car-24 arrived to report a 50% involved house with live power lines down. Since this house is located on a hill responding crews could see this fire from a great distance. Even Chooper 8 arrived on scene at the same time as first due crews. A 2nd alarm was activated bringing South Windam, Tankers from Windam Center, Lebanon, Lisbon, and Scotland. 1 firefighter was transported due to heat related illness. A defensive attack was started and a safety zones was established with the live power line on the ground.

July 7, 2006 - At around 11:30hrs Norwich FD Platoon 2 was dispatched to a matress fire at 21 Winchester St off Laurel Hill Ave. Norwich Crews arrived to find 2 story wood structure with smoke coming from the #2 floor. Handlines were stretched and crews started to attack the fire. Good team work from interior crews and outside crews help prevent this fire from taking the whole house. The fire was under control in 30 minutes. No injuries were reported

Lightning Strike - 39 Miller Rd

July 4, 2006 - At around 18:45hrs the Scotland, Canterbury and Baltic FD's responded to 39 Miller Rd for a house struck by lightning. Scotland Crews arrived to find a well involved barn style apartment. Crews started to attack the fire with handlines until the water supply ran out. Scotland R-516 and Windam Medic 31 transported a victim from the scene who was also the victim of a lightning strike. As is in most rural areas water supply is a big issue and Scotland's HT-116 laid about 1 mile of hose to a local brook for the water supply. The hot, humid weather with temperatures in the upper 80's did not help firefighters, most crews dressed out of their turnouts after a shift working the fire and drank plenty of water. Crews did an outstanding job in containing the fire to the building of origin

Downed Wire Safety

On Sunday June 25, 2006, Taftville was dispatched to wires down on Old Canterbury Turnpike. As most of you know I'm a BIG fan of wires down calls, "I just love them!!!" those that work with me know sometimes I make fun of some departments who respond to these types of calls calling them, "a waste of time" or "Bullsh*t" we (Taftville) don't respond to that many wires down but this one was of interest. As you can see in photo #2 a tree branch fell onto some primary electrical wires causing them to fall on the ground. A primary wire was down in the front yard of a house and every once in a while we would see flames coming from that down wired photo#3. I have always had alot of respect for electricity, I still do. If there is any chance of it being energized I'm out of there!! I let the professionals handle it! Once Norwich Public Utilities arrived at the scene,the crew shut off the power to the lines at the breakers and after examining the area we found these interesting marks left by the downed power lines. (Photos 4&5) Thanks to Eric Benoit for the last 2 photos.
The lesson learned is #1 Secure the area and deny entry #2 Stay the hell back as far as possible! (rule of thumb 2 telephone poles away, and #3 let the professionals handle the situation. We don't like it when some puts out our fires so why would we want to play with electricity

House Fire - 36 Leah Ave - Griswold

June 21,2006 - At 23:30hrs the Griswold FD with mutual aid from Jewett City, Voluntown, Lisbon and The Taftville FAST repsonded to 36 Leah Ave for a Structure fire. Griswold's Car-155 (Jeff Poitras) was first on scene and reported heavy fire on side's "C" and "D". The occupant was out of the dwelling upon FD arrival and was later transported to the Backus Hopsital for eval. The fire grew in such intensity due to numereous oxygen bottles located in the area of the fire ignited. The fire was brought under control in 2 hours with no firefighters injuried.

Note:These photos were taken late due to me being at a earlier fire at the casino. I do not have photos of that fire due to a strict tribal policy of photo taking during incidents on the property. Maybe someone else may have some photos to share of that incident.

Community Lawn Mower Fire

June 13, 2006 - at 09:20hrs QV emergency communications dispatched the Community Fire Co. of Thompson to a lawn mower fire at 43 Buckley Hill Rd. Service-181 was broken in to it's first fire call. Upon Arrival of Service-181 under the command of Car-381 )James Seney) a handline was stretched and the fire was almost knocked down when the gas tank let go on the tractor intensifing the fire. A dry chemical extinguisher was used to control the Class "B" fire. Units went into service there after. Service-181 replaces Forestry 181. Service-181 is a 2006 Ford F-450 forestry/first response vehicle for Community Fire Co. This unit was placed into service on May 21,2006

Norwich Drowning 06/16/06

June 16, 2006 - A evening outing at the Yantic Falls turned tragic at around 18:00hrs when a Norwich man slip and fell in the water. At 18:05hrs Norwich's Eng-3, Truck-1, Service-1 w/Boat were dispatched for a drowning at the Yantic Falls off Yantic St. Squad-A was clearing an EMS run and Eng-2 were added to the assignment. Norwich Eng-3 arrived first at the upper falls to assess the situation. A male had fallen into the water and had gone under the water at the base of the upper falls. Norwich crews secured safety lines across the river and denied access to the river of rescue personnel due to rough currents in the river. The CSP dive team was dispatched to the scene and arrived at around 18:55hrs. 1 Victim was transported to Backus for evaluation of a unknown medical condition. June 13, 2006 - At around 12:15hrs Norwich's Squad-A was dispatched to IFO 140 Broad St for a car vs fire hydrant w/injuries. while enroute "the Squad" came across a car vs fire hydrant IAO 150 Washington St by Broad St. American transported the occupants BLS to Backus while the Squad check for hazards from the car. The fire hydrant was flowing water and Norwich public utilities were on scene to control the water.
Note: since Washington st is a highly traveled road by casino patrons, numerous times have 911 callers given the wrong location of incidents due to being unfamiliar with the area as most of us know!

Plainfield Water Rescue 06/05/06

June 5, 2006 - The Atwood Hose Fire company in the Wauregan section of Plainfield was dispacthed for a water rescue on the quinebaug river at around 14:30hrs. 1 victim had walked out of the woods to summon help while another victim was still in the water traveling down the river towards Canterbury. The command post was established on Rt-205 at the bridge. Rescue boats were launched at the Quinebaug fish hatchery. The 2nd victim was able to get to shore and summon help near North Canterbury Road in Canterbury. Both victims refused treatment and all units were accounted for and went into service. Stations that responded were Atwood Hose, Moosup, Central Village,Plainfield, Mortlake, Oneco, Canterbury, South Dive Team, CSP-Troop D, and many other department who were cancelled enroute

June 4, 2006 - Tha Taftville and Canterbury fire departments conducted a joint live fire training drill at a burn house in Colchester. Taftville and Canterbury firefighters sharpened their skills on fire suppression, search & rescue, thermal imaging techniques, an other fireifgting skills. On behalf of both the Taftville and Canterbury fire departments we would like to thank Colchester for their time and energy it took to let us conduct this live fire training opportunity.

May 18, 2006 - At around 08:15hrs Quinebaug Valley 911 dispatched full assignments for Lisbon, Taftville and Jewett City FAST to 38 Club House Rd for a vehicle fire in an unattached garage. Lisbon Dep Chief Car-154 arrived with Taftville's ET-21 to find an active fire in the engine compartment of a car. A 1 3/4 handline was stretched and the fire was contained to the car and no extension to the garage. Only smoke and heat damage to the garage. Car-154,ET-21, Service-154 and Rescue-554 held the scene while the rest of the assignment went in service. The Lisbon FMO is investigation.

April 23, 2006 - At around 22:30hrs, Taftville Fire was dispatched to a vehicle fire at the corner of Sheas Ln and Merchants Ave. First arriving firefighters kept the fire in check with extinguishers until ET-21 arrived and put a line on the fire. The fire was extinguished with a 1 3/4 landline. The Norwich FMO is investigating. Units that responded were Car-129 (OIC), ET-21 and Rescue 2.

11 Grove Place - Norwich 2nd Alarm

April 22, 2006 - At around 20:42 hrs Norwich Fire received one 911 cell call reporting a structure fire at 11 Grove Pl. Norwich's Platoon 2 was dispatched and arrived to find a working fire in a vacant 2 1/2 stry wd. Squad Ax (Captain Kuraz) took command while Squad A, Eng-2,Eng-3 and Tower 1 worked the fire in a defensive manner. Norwich Chief Car-1 ( Chief Scand)arrived an assumed command from Squad A x and Norwich Car 10 (Dep. Chief Casey) had operations. Additional assignments from the Mohegan Tribal FAST Special Ops 1, Taftville ET-21,ET-22,and Tower-25 for a water supply and East Great Plains Eng-52 and Ladder 5 for city coverage. While enroute an evacuation order was announced due to the immediate collapse of the structure from the fire. The fire was contained to the building of origin with no firefighter or civilian injuries. Crews started to go into service around 23:30hrs. The Norwich FMO is investigating the cause. The total firefighters on scene, 29 (Norwich 14 Firefighters, Taftville 12 firefighters and Mohegan Tribal 3 firefighters)

Quaker Hill House Fire

April 15,2006 - At around 17:30hrs Waterford 911 received a 911 call reporting a fire in a laundry room at 603 Mohegan Ave (a.k.a Rt-32). Initial response was Quaker Hill,Cohanzie, and W-94. A fire officer at the scene reported a working fire and the Montville Fire Dept and Mohegan Tribal FAST was added to the assignment. W-25 arrived and stretched a line in the front door and stop the fire was extending to the rest of the structure. Good hoseline placement was key in stopping this fire. A excellant job by first arriving crews. Smoke and heat damage was evident thru-out the structure. No one was hurt and units went into service within 45 minutes.

March 31, 2006 - With a red flag warning for most of CT, conditions were ripe for this brush fire to start in Taftville along Rt 12 behind Taft Station. Crews arrived to find a active fire along the railroad tracks, One 1 3/4 hoseline with a forestry gate and two forestry lines were used to knock down and extinguish the fire. One civilian was treated by Taftville and American personnnel for a medical condition that occurred while attempting to fight the fire prior to Taftville's arrival. This was the third time Taftville FD was at this location for a brush fire in the past two weeks

CL&P Transformer Explosion/Brush Fire - Preston

March 28, 2006 - At around 16:00hrs a transformer explosion occurred at the CL&P plant on the banks of the Quinebaug River. This explosion sparked a large brush fire that sent Preston City, Poqutonuck, and City of Norwich Units to the scene. It was unclear at the time whether the stations were still charged with electricity. Crews waited for CL&P representative to arrive to secure power before extinguishing the fire. Fire crews from Lisbon, Franklin, Griswold, and Jewett City were responding to numerous fire alarms since the power was out in the area. Taftville and Lisbon were both dispatched to Rt 12 for a brush fire but upon investigation it was determined the smoke was from the Preston fire.

March 6, 2006 - While this day most of the region's Fire Dept's had their share of MVA's, Taftville had it's hsare of auto accidents as well.
The first picture is from a car vs 2 telephone poles on Norwich Ave. The call happened around 02:30hrs and 1 person was trsnported with mnor injuries. TFD remains on the scene for Norwich Public Utilities due to a live primary wire down.
The second accident happened around 13:00hrs. A white mustang pulling out of the Three Rivers college rear lot was almost hit by another car, the driver attempted to to get out of the way but "gunning it" which made the car spin out of control and hit a rock wall, flipping the car on to it's roof. 1 Pt was transported by AASI BLS

March 2,2006 - At around 08:30hrs the Bozrah FD with mutual aid from Gardner Lake,East Great Plains,Yantic, Oakdale,Mohegan Tribal, Colchester and Mohegan FD's for a structure fire at 52 South Rd. Units arrived to find heavy fire on the "A" side of a residential dwelling. Due to Exploding ammunition a defensive attack was started. It was reported over 400 guns were in the house at the time of the fire. It was also reported the owner left ashes from a wood stove near the front porch which may have started the fire
